Health classes explained

The four main tiers—Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard—explained and how carriers move applicants among them.

Term life pricing follows rate class tiers. While names shift between carriers, the structure stays the same: Preferred Plus (sometimes labeled Super Preferred or Preferred Best), Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard, then table ratings for elevated risk. Tobacco applicants occupy their own tier ladder at higher prices.

What underwriters look at

Factors include body metrics (height and weight), blood pressure, cholesterol levels, family history of early heart attack or cancer, driving history, medications, job and pastimes, and any tobacco or nicotine use. Reaching the top class requires strong marks across the board; Preferred tolerates a few minor issues; Standard Plus and Standard accommodate managed conditions like medicated high blood pressure.

How to use the quote tool

Rate your health honestly: Excellent aligns with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus, and Average with Standard. Quotes follow your selection; underwriting confirms the actual class later. Unsure? Try both and compare; the final application settles it. Inflating your health rating does not cut the price—it only skews the quote.

Susman Insurance Agency can point you toward carriers whose underwriting guidelines work better with a particular condition; this often carries more weight than advertised rates.
