How much life insurance do you need?

A tool for working through the calculation, plus explanation of each component: income years, debts, education, and existing assets.

The typical approach: total up the income your household would have earned plus major debts, then subtract existing savings and group coverage. It does not have to be exact—term insurance comes in round numbers anyway—and the aim is a total that would sustain your family through the critical years.

Coverage estimate

$1,765,000

Estimate = income × years + debts + education − current savings and group coverage, rounded to the nearest $5,000. This is a starting point for exploration, not professional guidance.

Why those inputs

Income years. Most advisors suggest coverage for 10 to 20 years; the right span depends on how long your dependents need support. Temecula families with young children frequently pick the longer end because school, housing and childcare expenses stack together during those years.

Debts. A mortgage typically represents the biggest debt for households in Temecula. Enough coverage to pay it off preserves survivors' freedom to choose their path without being driven by immediate cash needs.

Education. A modest allowance per child in current dollars. Building it in now is simpler than purchasing additional coverage later.

What you have. Available savings and any group life coverage from your employer. Because group coverage typically stops if you leave the job, many households only count a portion of it.

Once you've settled on a target, the quote tool displays what each carrier will charge for that amount across 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30-year terms. Many people buy somewhat higher than their estimate because monthly premiums at younger ages don't increase much for extra coverage.
